Intro: Welcome to the French Made Easy podcast, where I give you all the basics you need to speak French clearly and confidently. I'm your host, Mathilde, and I'm a French teacher, mumpreneur, and bread and cheese lover. Join me as I dive into all things French for beginners, and deliver to you bite-sized and easy-to-follow lessons every Tuesday. Let's get started, "on commence"!

Hello everyone! Bonjour à tous! Welcome back to the French Made Easy podcast. This is episode number 104, numéro 104!

It's been a while since we learned some vocabulary, so today, you'll learn 15 musical instruments in French (for example the guitar, the violin, etc.) I’ll also share with you at the end of this episode 2 ways to say “I play [and then your instrument.]”

Obviously, there are a lot more instruments, but I might do a "Part II" later with more of them.

If you're new here, make sure you have your lesson's cheat sheet in front of you so you can see the words while listening to the lesson. The download link is in the episode notes on the podcast platform you're listening to. There is no exercise for this particular episode, but you can still head over to the French Made Easy Library to download all the other episode exercises. The link is also in the episode notes.

Alright, let's get started. Please repeat after me, so you can practice your pronunciation too.

  • le tambour (drum) 🥁

  • le xylophone (xylophone)

  • la harpe (harp)

  • la guitare acoustique (acoustic guitar)

  • la guitare électrique (electric guitar) 🎸

  • le violon (violin) 🎻

  • l'accordéon (accordion)

  • la flûte (flute)

  • la trompette (trumpet)

  • le piano (piano) 🎹

  • la saxophone (saxophone) 🎷

  • l'harmonica (harmonica)

  • la batterie (drums, drum kit)

  • le violoncelle (cello)

  • la clarinette (clarinet)

Now let's see how to use these words.

To say "I play + [instrument]."

So to say "I play guitar" for example, you can use the verbs:

  • jouer + the preposition “de” + a definite article (le, la, l', les) + [your instrument.]

OR

  • faire + the preposition “de” + a definite article (le, la, l’, les) + [your instrument.]

For example:

  • Je joue de la guitare.

Don't forget that you can't use the preposition “de” and the article "le" together.

So when you have a definite article and a masculine noun, in that case, a masculine instrument, make sure you contract and use "du" instead.

DE + LE = DU

  • Je joue du violon. (And not DE LE violon. ❌)

Et voilà, that's the end of today's episode. I hope you enjoyed it! I'll chat with you in the next lesson. 💕
