Hello everyone, welcome back to the French Made Easy podcast! This is episode number 153, numéro 153. Today’s episode is another short and sweet episode, I’ll teach you 3 ways to say “thank you” in French. 😊👌 There are obviously a lot more ways to say “thank you”, but I’ll just give you the 3 most useful ones!

Now, as usual, before we start our lesson, if you're new to the podcast, welcome! Make sure you have your lesson's cheat sheet in front of you, so you can listen to the words and see how they are written. And there are no exercises for this episode, again because it’s a very short, bite-sized lesson.

Alright, let’s see 3 ways to say “thank you” in French.

1. Merci (Thank you)

The simplest and most common way to say thank you in French. You can use this in any situation, casual or formal.

Par example:

A: J'ai réparé ton vélo. (I fixed your bike.)

B: Merci, je vais pouvoir l'utiliser demain! (Thank you, I’ll be able to use it tomorrow!)

2. Merci beaucoup (Thank you very much)

For when you’re extra grateful!

A: J'ai trouvé tes clés ! (I found your keys!)

B: Merci beaucoup, je les cherchais partout! (Thank you very much, I was looking everywhere for them!)

3. Je te remercie / Je vous remercie (I thank you)

Those two expressions are more formal, so best to use to use in more formal situations, and probably more commonly used in writing. With “Je vous remercie” being even formal, since we use the formal pronoun “vous.” And by the way, if you’re not sure whether to use “tu” or “vous” to say “you” , check out episode number 48 of the French Made Easy podcast. I’ve linked it in the transcript.

For example:

Je te remercie pour ton soutien. (I thank you for your support.) / Je vous remercie pour votre soutien. (I thank you for your support - more formal.)

Another example:

Je te remercie pour ta compréhension. / Je vous remercie pour votre compréhension. (I thank you for your understanding.)

Ok, so quick recap of our 3 ways to say “thank you” in French

  1. Merci

  2. Merci beaucoup

  3. Je te remercie / Je vous remercie

Et voilà, that’s the end of today’s episode, I told you that was pretty short! I hope you enjoyed it. À la semaine prochaine! Chat with you next week.
