Heys guys! Salut à tous! Welcome back to the French Made Easy podcast! This is episode number eighteen, numéro dix-huit! In today's episode, we'll learn the words to talk about your extended family in French.

Make sure you download your cheat sheet so that you can follow along, it's free. After the lesson, go and download your exercises. It's also free!

Alright, vous êtes prêts? Are you ready? On commence.

In last week's episode, part 1, we learned the words to talk about your immediate family, such as your parents, siblings, etc. If you haven't listened to it yet, go and listen to episode 17! For now, let’s focus on your extended family.

Just a quick reminder that all nouns in French are either feminine or masculine. So if I say "la" you'll know it's a feminine noun; if I say "le," it's a masculine noun! So make sure you learn the gender of the noun, it's really important. Cool, on y va, let’s go.

Répétez après moi, repeat after me:

  • Le petit-fils (grandson)

  • La petite-fille (granddaughter)

  • Le cousin (cousin - male)

  • La cousine (cousin - female)

  • L'oncle (uncle)

  • It can also be: le tonton (uncle)

  • La tante (aunt)

  • It can also be: la tata (auntie)

  • Le neveu (nephew)

  • La nièce (niece)

  • La belle-mère (mother-in-law ) It can also mean step-mother!

  • Le beau-père (father-in-law) Same! It can also mean step-father.

  • Le beau-frère (brother-in-law or step-brother)

  • La belle-sœur (sister-in-law or step-sister)

  • La belle-fille (daughter-in-law or step-daughter)

  • Le beau-fils (son-in-law or step-son)

Alright! I think that's enough words for one lesson! I don’t want to overwhelm you!

Now, as usual, let's repeat everything together ok?

  • Le petit-fils (grandson)

  • La petite-fille (granddaughter)

  • Le cousin (cousin - male)

  • La cousine (cousin - female)

  • L'oncle (uncle)

  • La tante (aunt)

  • La tata (auntie)

  • Le neveu (nephew)

  • La nièce (niece)
