I'm your host, Mathilde, and I'm a French teacher, mumpreneur, and bread and cheese lover. Join me as I dive into all things French for beginners, and deliver to you bite-sized and easy-to-follow lessons every Tuesday. Let's get started, "on commence"!

Hi guys! Bonjour à tous! Welcome back to the French Made Easy podcast! This is episode number 60, numéro 60.

In previous episodes, we've learned what prepositions to use before countries, and today we'll look at what prepositions to use before cities. And honestly, it's much easier cause you don't have to worry about gender.

In this lesson, you'll learn how to translate the prepositions "from," "to," and "in" before a city name in French.

So, before we get started, as usual, please download your lesson's cheat sheet; it's going to be much easier for you to understand. It's free. After the lesson, go and download your lesson's exercises, to practice what you've learned. It's also free.

Alright, vous êtes prêts? Let's get started.

  • To say "from" before a city, use the preposition "de

For example:

Je viens de Paris. (I come from Paris)

  • But if the city starts with a vowel, replace the preposition "de" with "d'."

For example:

Je viens d'Amsterdam (I come from Amsterdam.) Amsterdam starts with a vowel, so I replace "de" by "d'"

Ok next,

  • To say "in" or "to" before a city name, use the preposition "à"

Par exemple:

"J'habite à Paris." (I live in Paris.") or other example, "Je vais à Paris." (I'm going to Paris.)

Alright, so let's recap what we've learned today:

  • To say "from" before a city, use the preposition "de" (Je viens de Paris.) Change it to "d'" if the city starts with a vowel. (Je viens d'Amsterdam.)

  • To say "in" or "to" before a city, use the preposition "à" (J'habite à Paris ou je vais à Paris."

Alright guys, that's it for this week. I hope you enjoyed this episode. Thanks so much for listening. Don't forget to go and download your lesson's exercises to practice what you've learned today. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd really appreciate a quick rating and review on Apple Podcast
