Intro: Welcome to the French Made Easy podcast, where I give you all the basics you need to speak French clearly and confidently. I'm your host, Mathilde, and I'm a French teacher, mumpreneur, and bread and cheese lover. Join me as I dive into all things French for beginners, and deliver to you bite-sized and easy-to-follow lessons every Tuesday. Let's get started, "on commence"!

Salut Ă  tous! Hi everyone! Welcome back to the French Made Easy podcast! This is episode number 26, numĂ©ro 26! Thanks for joining me here! In this lesson, we're talking veggies! You'll first learn 15 vegetable names in French, and then after that, we'll do a little quiz. Sound good? Great.

Before we get started, don't forget to download your lesson's cheat sheet, the link is in the description. C'est gratuit, it's free. After the lesson, go and download your exercises, so you can practice what you've learned. C'est aussi gratuit. It's also free!

OK. Vous ĂŞtes prĂŞts. Are you ready? C'est parti.

So let's get straight to the point and learn these 15 vegetables, ces 15 légumes.

By the way, a vegetable in French is “un légume”

Très bien! Donc rĂ©pĂ©tez après moi, repeat after me.

  • un poireau (a leek)

  • une pomme de terre 🥔 (a potato)

  • une carotte 🥕 (a carrot)

  • des haricots verts (green beans)

I have to make a pronunciation note here. The "H" in French is always, always, silent, so you don't pronounce it. But this particular "H" here, is called an "aspirated H." It means that the liaison is not allowed. So you don't say "des zzz haricots verts" ❌ you say "des haricots verts." ✅ Do you hear the difference?

Now, I explain the aspirated H and the liaison in my course French Pronunciation Kickstarter. It's the complete A-Z pronunciation course for French beginners struggling with their spoken French and wanting to communicate clearly and confidently. So, if you just started to learn French or you've been working to improve your French pronunciation for a while, go check it out now at mathildekien.com/fpme

Alright, now let's go back to our vegetables!

  • une tomate 🍅 (a tomato)

  • des champignons 🍄 (mushrooms)

  • une courgette (a zucchini)

  • un poivron (a pepper)

  • de l’ail 🧄 (garlic)

  • un oignon 🧅 (an onion)

  • une salade verte 🥬 (a green salad)

  • un chou-fleur (a cauliflower)

  • un brocoli 🥦 (a broccoli)

  • une patate douce 🍠 (a sweet potato)

  • des asperges (asparagus)

Alright, done! We've got our 15 vegetables, nos 15 lĂ©gumes.

QUIZ

Now let’s do a little quiz! Take your eyes off the cheat sheet if you’ve got it in front of you. First I'm going to say the words in English, I'll give you a few seconds to answer and then, I'll provide the answer. Sounds good? OK on y va.
