Bonjour à tous! Hello everyone! Welcome back to the French Made Easy podcast! This is episode number 33, numéro 33. In this lesson, we're talking about the seasons in French! I'll give you a few pronunciation tips, and I'll also share with you some examples.

Sounds good? Super.

As usual, make sure you download your lessons cheat sheet, so you can follow along. It's free. At the end of the lesson, go and download your exercises, so you can practice what you've learned. Good news, it's also free.

First, the word season in French is "la saison." It's a feminine word. "La saison." The plural form is "les saisons."

So, in France, il y a quatre saisons. There are four seasons.

They are:

  • Le printemps (spring) 🌸

  • L’été (summer) ☀️

  • L’automne (fall) 🍁

  • L’hiver (winter) ⛄️

So now, let's talk a bit about pronunciation.

First, do not pronounce the “p” and the “s” in the word "printemps." It's not "le printempsss" ok? "le printemps". The 'P' and the 'S' are silent here.

Then do not pronounce the "m" in "automne." It's not autommmne." "It's automne." Pretend the "M" is not even there.

To finish, you DO have to pronounce the R in the word “l’hiver.”

Ok, now let's learn how to actually talk about seasons.

To say "in…+ the season" (such as in winter, or in summer… ):

You have to use the prepositions "en" or "au."

I know we haven't talked about preposition yet, but we will soon!

For now, just remember that to talk about the seasons, "en" and "au" means "in."

So which one should you use?

For summer, fall and winter, you will use "en."

  • En été (in summer)

  • En automne (in fall)

  • En hiver (in winter)

For spring, you will use "au."

  • In spring is “au printemps.”

Great. So now, let's see a few examples!

  • Les fleurs poussent au printemps. (In spring, flowers are blooming.)

  • En été, il fait chaud. (In summer, it's warm outside.)

  • En automne, les températures baissent. (In fall, temperatures are dropping.)

  • En hiver, il fait froid. (In winter, it's cold.)

Alright, so now it's your turn. Quelle est votre saison préférée? What's your favorite season? Let me know in the comments on my website.

Moi, ma saison préférée, c’est le printemps. Car au printemps, il y a beaucoup de fleurs. Et les fleurs, c’est super joli.

Well, that's already the end of your lesson, guys! Thank you so much for listening. If you've enjoyed this episode, please leave me a review on Apple podcast; it's helping a lot.
